                              At the heart of the Group’s innovation strategy, the R&D anticipates and meets the societal challenges and needs of its clients. The R&D teams design and develop new technologies and services in energy and environmental transition, changes in healthcare, and digitization. To do it, the R&D has developed a strong expertise on essential small molecules (Oxygene, Nitrogen, Argon, Hydrogen, Helium, Silane...): the scientific territory of the Group.

                              To make it possible, the R&D relies on two assets: its scientific expertise and its Innovation Campuses.

                              Scientific expertise

                              R&D is relying on science to build the future. Thanks to a strong expertise on Essential Small Molecules and its knowledge on data science, R&D has a wide range of competencies in:

                              With its 200 scientific and industrial partners, R&D is actively working to enrich its knowledge of Small Essential Molecules to explore new horizons and thus provide solutions to the industry's future challenges.

                              Our 18 essential molecules are: oxygen (O2), nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), argon (Ar), xenon (Xe), krypton (Kr), neon (Ne), helium (He), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (N2O), acetylene (C2H2), ozone (O3), water (H2O), silane (SiH4).

                              The innovation Campuses

                              With 5 Innovation Campuses located on 3 continents, the R&D is well connected with key innovation ecosystems. It allows global management with local anchoring to adapt to the needs of our customers, for example, in Asia with?laser-cutting, in the US with data science and cobotics, and in Europe with hydrogen mobility business and the technological roadmap.

                              The campuses host researchers, customers, business partners, start-up companies, and academics but also technical teams from other Air Liquide entities.?The one in Paris even hosts a start-up accelerator called: Accelair.

                              They bring together all parties involved in the process of innovation, from both inside and outside Air Liquide, to blend skills and disciplines, facilitate collective intelligence, and accelerate the innovation.?

                              Air Liquide aims to help researchers around the world in their research to develop solutions that will offer sustainable technologies.?

                              This is the reason why the Air Liquide's scientific challenges?were created. They are an integral part of our driver for innovation and openness with ecosystems.

                              Since 2016, these open competitions have inspired the scientific community to innovate through the Essential Small Molecules and develop new applications in areas related to air quality and climate change. Winners are granted a prize and a funding plan to pursue their projects.

                              By enriching our knowledge of Essential Small Molecules, Air Liquide contributes to solving crucial issues in the areas of production, purification, transport, and storage.

                              Each Innovation Campus incorporates a prestigious community of experts and talents dedicated to designing new ways of using the properties of our Essential Small Molecules and developing innovative applications for our business partners and clients.

                              Located near Airgas headquarters, this Campus provides technical and innovation support to Air Liquide's activities, notably in the American markets. The Campus leverages the scientific and creative power of the North American territory through its academic and industrial partnerships.

                              Innovation Campus Paris (France)

                              This Campus embodies the innovative approach of the Group, particularly for the energy and environmental transition, health and digital transformation. It includes the largest R&D Center of the Group, a building that has just been completely renovated, with 48 laboratories and experimental platforms, on 15 000m2

                              Since 2019, the Campus hosts Accelair, the deeptech start-up and companies accelerator by Air Liquide. Accelair hosts these start-ups on nearly 3,000 m2 spread over 4 buildings and offers them access to shared experimentation and test facilities, but also a tailored acceleration program.

                              This Campus focuses on the development of innovative solutions for converting fossil or biomass raw materials into synthesis gas, hydrogen, fuels and chemicals.

                              Innovation Campus Shanghai (China)

                              In this Campus, our scientific experts work in several research fields including energy efficiency, technologies for reducing industrial CO2 emissions, water treatment and food preservation and freezing processes.

                              Inaugurated in 2016, this Campus includes laboratories, offices, showrooms, and pilot demonstration platforms that spread across 12,000 m2. The building was designed according to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification, a global standard for sustainable construction, taking into account efficient water management, proper energy usage and the reduction of emissions.

                              Research Center Korea

                              Founded in 2012, Air Liquide Laboratories Korea is located in the prestigious University of Yonsei in Seoul, benefiting from a privileged scientific environment. This Center provides technical and innovation support to the Group's subsidiaries in South Korea and around the world for the development of solutions for the semiconductor, photovoltaic and flat panel industries.
